On most projects conducted in the construction, shipyard, oilfield, and utility industries, the value of the procured goods and services can be from 60 to 80% of the overall cost of the project. Additionally in many industries, the “long lead” procurements must be placed within days after the project award date. In order to successfully manage the procured deliverables requires that the project manager and project team be versed in the best practices related to procurement management. PMCC has been intimately involved in the procurement process on major projects all over the world. PMCC can assist you with project procurement management in a variety of ways:

1. Training: PMCC has taught hundreds of project team how to properly manage the procurement of project deliverables. PMCC training courses differentiate between the processes related to traditional buying (e.g. issuing a purchase order) and the more intense and time consuming process of going out for vendor bids. We help project teams understand the negotiation processes and the types of tactics and techniques involved. As with all of our courses, we can customize the content to reflect the corporate processes and culture at your company. (Also see our Best Practice – Project Negotiations listing)

2. Consulting/Mentoring: PMCC has provided consulting assistance on large construction related projects all over the world. In several instances, we have helped improve the efficiency of the vital hand off between engineering and procurement by reviewing and simplifying the project requisitioning process. In some cases, we have assisted clients by visiting the manufacturing sites for major procured deliverables and then provided an assessment of the project status for that deliverable.

3. Teaming/Contracting: PMCC has provided short term and long term contract project staff for project teams since its inception in 1991. If you need experienced project procurement staff members, PMCC can interview, assess, and assist you in indentifying candidates that best fit the corporate culture that you operate in.
